Audience Feedback On Music Video

In order to gain an insight in the audiences opinions of my media product I created a questionnaire which I handed out to and students that were willing to fill it out in my college as they were all in the target audience age range anyone willing to watch my music video, this helped me see what the audience found particularly good about the video and also gave me tips on how I could improve it if I were to do it again.

I also created a poll at the start of my planning to get a brief idea of what the audience expect, this helped me decide what to include within my music video as although not many people voted on the poll some of the votes were almost unanimous in decision making it hard to ignore. The results showed:
  • People were most interested in seeing a music video in the genre of RnB, this was closely followed by Soul, this is the reason I chose the song B Boy Baby as it is a mixture of both genres
  • The audience all agreed that the music video is essential when promoting an artist therefore it waist very important that the artist was presented in a way which would appeal to the target audience and to fit in with her styles of songs which is love therefore she would need to be seen as innocent etc.
  • The audience do not think dance sequences are essential to produce a good music video, this benefited me as I would of had to of found good dancers willing to spend time being filmed and not all of them may of been available at the same time or have been committed enough which I found with my cast list.
  • Another interesting result was that the audience found music videos were interesting when they included types of animation. This is what inspired me to produce simple moving images which could go behind the artist while she was singing.
  • The poll also helped me see the main age range of whom watched music videos which was 16-19 years old therefore I decided that this would be my target audience.
In total I asked 100 students to fill out the questionnaire, these are the percentages which I collected:
Questionnaire
1. Are you male or female? (circle one)                                                      Male - 41%        Female - 59%

2. Do you understand the storyline of the music video? (circle one)             Yes -97%         No - 3%

3. Please give a simple explanation of what you feel the storyline was.
(one version of most common answer, all these answers were very similar) - The girl is in love with the boy and is drawing pictures in class which the boy finds and then starts to like her too.

4. Did you make the link between the the girl sat at the desk with a pencil and paper drawing and these drawings being in the background when she is singing? (circle one)    Yes - 95%         No - 5%

5. Do you feel there was enough locations in the video? (circle one)           Yes - 85%         No - 15%

6. Can you see the reason for each location being in the video? If no, which one/s and why?
Yes - 89%        No - 11%
(Most common answer for No) - I didn't understand why the girl was in her back garden

7. Does the video show continuity throughout? (circle one)                       Yes - 94%        No - 6%

8. What would you suggest to improve the music video?
(Different types of answers)
  • Have a steadier camera as its sometimes a but jumpy
  • Make the pictures better and more colourful
  • Do more scenes showing the boy and girl falling for each other
  • Re shoot some of the footage to make it better
  • Change some of the locations such as the garden
  • Make the shot of the phone brighter because it is quite dim around the phone
  • Nothing I think it is good as it is
  • You could of included more people in the video to make it more interesting
  • More costume changes
  • Make the acting more realistic
Analysis of Questionnaire
Overall this audience feedback is quite pleasing with the majority of people giving positive answers. The improvements are all valid and if I were to re shoot my music video I would take all of these on board and give myself much more time for the full process. The feedback also shows that both male and female students have given their opinions so these answers can be taken into consideration for both genders.
